Many of the strategies can be used by anyone who is working with students in content classes as an EC or ESL teacher, too. You can also share this presentation with any co-teacher who might need some ideas that are content-independent. :)

I agree, Kirk! Different does not equal "more" or "less", just … different. :)
Mz Yavuz
36:59
Isn’t that just academic tracking?
Jeni Day
38:37
Great question, @Mz Yavuz! All of the students are in the same class and not all assignments are differentiated. Many are collaborative. To avoid tracking in a way that is damaging to students, online learning allows the ability to differentiate as much or as little as needed, and to do so privately for the student.
Henry Hall
39:01
What do you use to closed caption your videos?
Tiffany Grant
39:18
We’ll go over that a little later in the webinar . :)
Cherita
39:20
Thanks Henry. I had that question as well
Inmaculada Hill
39:20
Choice boards are good to have students choose what they are best at doing. They differentiate their own learning.
Jeni Day
39:21
Mastery pathways in Canvas can be complex, but the presenters will share some simpler strategies if you aren't ready to tackle that level of Canvas use. :)
Henry Hall
39:40
Thanks Tiffany, Cherita.
JROTC
39:44
That's a great idea regarding videos...!!!!
Tiffany Grant
39:48
I love Choice Boards! :)
Jeni Day
39:56
I agree, @Immaculada! Choice boards are definitely something I use a LOT and that I love.
Jeni Day
41:03
You can take Choice Boards to a higher level, too, and use Choice Paths - where students choose different pathways to achieve the learning goals for a unit/topic from choices outlined or a different "role" to fulfill in a unit.
RDorway
41:31
I've heard the term flipping quite a few times. Can someone please explain the concept of flipping for me.
Heather Pitt
41:31
Is this all using canvas only?
Tiffany Grant
41:39
Nope :)
Kim Loudermilk
41:40
I love Choice Boards too.
Kellie Perkins
41:47
Does the speech also work with a pc?
Jeni Day
41:59
This is a great tool, too, for ELL students. And, yes - it is built into Canvas. :)
Jeni Day
42:36
@RDorway, "flipping" a class means offering the typical "lecture" or "reading" portion to complete outside of class and doing the practice and (hopefully) hands-on work during class time.
RDorway
42:37
What about Blackboard?
Rosario Salamanca
42:38
Great for Spanish class for all students
Tiffany Grant
43:01
Blackboard is very similar to Canvas.
Kim Baechle
43:02
You can also provide similar instruction through Google Classroom/ Google Docs, and ScreenCastify correct?
Don Perkins
43:06
CCS goes to it this year.
Zoletta Taylor
43:15
We will use canvas also in Cumberland County.
Lynette Bishop
43:18
Flipping is synonymous with front loading...
Henry Hall
43:19
How do you close caption your videos?
Suzanne Russ
43:36
I like the idea of choice paths (sorry I'm late - S Russ from Cumberland County)
Jesse.Wolf
43:42
On your slide 8, was that a link at the bottom that allowed students to submit questions?

Cherita
46:13
Thanks Kirk and Jeni

46:16
Thanks Tiffany, yes it has been a long day
Jeni Day
47:26
@Tyrone and Gloria, I am not sure about Blackboard. Here is a link to the Blackboard Community page. The Canvas community page has been a lifesaver for me with Canvas, so I imagine this would be the same for Bb. :) https://community.blackboard.com/home
Miss Mitchell
48:05
thanks @jeniday
keyahna alford
48:14
thanks for the blackboard link!
Jeni Day

All slides used during this session AND the recorded session (including chat) will be made available on our resources page: https://www.ncvps.org/digital-transition so please feel free to listen and discuss without taking additional notes. If you are using Canvas, you may also wish to check out https://community.canvaslms.com/ which has an incredible collection of resources directly related to using Canvas as a classroom tool.
Zoletta Taylor
50:06
Can other people change things you have created? Or do they have to make a copy first?
Jeni Day
50:07
Quizlet is another tool I use a LOT for my ELL students. Adding in that image and offering repetition is SO HELPFUL!
kirk kennedy
50:11
Hey Kellie!
Jeni Day
50:19
@Zoletta - they would have to copy to edit.
Inmaculada Hill
50:20
Be sure to check the flashcards if you borrow the set from someone before you show it to the students. I had to edit many Quizlet sets done by teachers because they missed the written accents in Spanish.
Jeni Day
50:41
@Inmaculada - YES! I second and third that (but for science, not Spanish) - lol
Zoletta Taylor
50:45
Thanks and whew! Glad to hear that.
Jeni Day
51:37
The benefit to assignments is that you can add it to their "to-do" list. You can also add announcements to the to-do list, if you'd like. As a parent, it is helpful to see it as an "assignment" to understand it is something my student should complete.
Davina Joshua 7th Grade
51:57
How do you get rid of the side advertisements?
Jeni Day
52:12
And you can set an assignment to be "complete/incomplete" to make it quick to "grade", if you are worried about having a lot of submissions coming in on the daily. :)
Jeni Day
52:31
@Davina - if you embed the Quizlet you won't have advertisements. It is a little trickier (but not much!!!)
kirk kennedy
53:51
You can embed school net into canvas as well
Martha
54:03
If you want to check your students progress in Quizlet, you have to pay and you can see their progress. I found it very helpful on remote learning.
Jeni Day
54:16
Canvas has a to-do list that shows up on the Course Home Page, too. So if you are using Canvas, the to-do list is built in to the course. HOWEVER, it can get overwhelming to students with executive function issues if they get behind, so a paper copy works really well. I like to attach the to-do list as a PDF so they can print it off and physically check it off.
Charles Hall
54:47
I love this checklist
Jeni Day
55:07
@Martha - yes! I got so addicted to that feature. I may have to go pro for Quizlet because I do use it a lot. :)
Kim Roberts
55:08
great idea
Jeni Day
55:25
@Shekela - I agree - hyperdocs are amazing and keep things cohesive!
Jeni Day
55:48
@Quizziz is great, too, because you can assign it for independent practice.
Heidi Miller
55:52
Quizizz also allows the students to self correct with their redemption cards
Inmaculada Hill
55:59
I like Quizziz better than Kahoot. Quizalize is also another choice.
kirk kennedy
56:17
I have not heard of Quizalize
Heidi Miller
56:30
Thanks for that one Inmaculada!
Jeni Day
56:40
@Denecia, you could use it however it works best for your students. We teach high school so have one subject, but my kids teachers (2, 4, and 6th grade) did one hyperdoc "to-do" for all subjects per week.
ReginnaZ
56:52
Quizizz is my go to for gauging understanding and comprehension

Inmaculada Hill
57:37
They score the students quizzes automatically!
Kim Baechle
57:41
Awesome utilizable tools! Thanks so much :)
Jeni Day
58:03
@Mal - if you want Quizlet to show you student scores as a class easily, I believe so. I will ask Tiffany about Quizzizz. :)
RDorway
58:06
Thanks for sharing Inmaculada.
Jeni Day
58:21
@Immaculada, thank you for the new resource!! :) Love learning new tools!

Jeni Day
58:47
Universal language, and all that - lol
Kim Loudermilk
58:53
Great images!
Jeni Day
01:00:14
Screenshots are something that will allow you to "check" a lot of student work when you are sending them to games, etc. For younger students, the "how-to" of a screenshot may be something you need to teach explicitly before using, though.
Inmaculada Hill
01:00:19
Quia is free now?
kirk kennedy
01:01:03
@19103… I have used Kahoot and zoom together before
Jeni Day
01:01:06
@19103 - I have done that with Quizlet and it was fun! I haven't tried it with Quizziz but imagine it would work the same? Might be hard for younger kids to manage two tabs or two devices, but definitely middle and up can handle it!
Inmaculada Hill
01:01:11
No sound?
Jeni Day
01:01:41
@Immaculada - not through Zoom, unfortunately, BUT it is present on the "real" video that you will be able to access via the slides. :)
Kellie Perkins
01:01:43
There was sound?
Miss Mitchell
01:01:56
i didn't hear any sound?
Charles Hall
01:02:08

Jeni Day
01:03:13
@Teresa - thank you!! We will definitely work on that for next time. :)
Nathalie Morse
01:03:34
What do you do for the students who's parents won't let them on youtube when they can't hear the video in Zoom?
Kellie Perkins
01:03:46
safeyoutube.net
Heidi Miller
01:03:48
Quizizz with zoom is also awesome!! Students don't even need to split screen or use another device as with kahoot. Their one devices excellent. They get immediate feedback and so will you.
keyahna alford
01:04:07
Thanks kellie for the link
Jeni Day
01:04:10
@Nathalie - I am hearing you can select to allow computer sound if you do that prior to the screenshare, so that might be a great option! We are not technically "hosts" in the Zoom but those settings should be available to you when you are!
Nicole Rumley
01:04:41
I love the fonts you use and the layout of your text, what do you use to create these types of presentations?
Inmaculada Hill
01:04:42
You can embed YouTube videos in Canvas showing only that video.
Jeni Day
01:04:42
@Teresa - lol. Best way to learn, yes? Necessity is the mother of … desperate Google searching and clicking on the site! :)
kirk kennedy
01:04:43
@Nathalie… also if you embed the video into an LMS parents may let their students do look at the youtube video because it is safe
Kellie Perkins
01:05:02
@keyahna My pleasure
Jeni Day
01:05:47
@Nicole, Tiffany is the QUEEN of visuals and graphic design. I will ask her for her fave tools in just a moment for you! :)
Henry Hall
01:07:44
Flash will no longer be supported on Chrome after December, so avoid it.
Jeni Day
01:07:44
Yes! Anytime you make a video tutorial, or a Google Slide presentation, or any other "help" resource for students, I highly recommend keeping it in a virtual folder. You can even store it in Google Drive and allow students to access as view-only so they can search for help themselves. :)
Tereasa Turner
01:07:55
Waiting for the handouts! I see some possibilities here.
Jeni Day
01:08:00
@Henry - exactly!!!!!
keyahna alford
01:08:20
thanks for the tips
Jeni Day
01:08:27

Henry Hall
01:08:31
Unfortunately there are great virtual labs that have been a staple for years that use Flash.
Jeni Day
01:08:52
@Henry - I KNOW. It makes me SO SAD to lose so many science interactives when Flash goes away.
Kim Roberts
01:10:18
can you use you tube in NCVPS?
Henry Hall
01:10:23
Could we upload a google meets video to YouTube and they could possibly close caption it?
kirk kennedy
01:10:56
My close caption is not always 100% correct because some say I have an accent!
Jeni Day
01:11:04
We will have a webinar on making teacher-videos coming up where we will definitely dive into the different options, including how to get captions and transcripts. :)
Inmaculada Hill
01:11:18
Our Spanish online Spanish book has a bunch of activities using Flash...It is a pity!! :(
Miss Mitchell
01:11:19
@Kirk LOL
Jeni Day
01:12:11
And you can embed that video right into your announcement.
Drew Laningham
01:12:24
Do Chromebooks use Flash?
JROTC
01:12:50
Good stuff.
Debora McPhaul
01:12:54
Good to know the slides will be available to attendees.
Jeni Day
01:12:56
I did that at the beginning of each week to show students what to do for the week and sent it out via Remind as well as embedding it in the announcement, so students (and parents) could reference that later as needed. My advice is just to keep it short. :)
Jeni Day
01:13:00
