I agree with that classdojo post. It is treated like sending messages/pictures/recordings to parents and students. My children's teachers have been using it all year.

Lucas Eitner
47:39
Parents are stressed and might have priorities for their families. Is there a way to talk to parents about helping with motivating their children.
Diane Reed
47:48
Positive emails definitely help. Several of my online students have actually responded and said thank you for the feedback. I've seen their grades start increasing after this.
John Cunningham
47:50
Hello Mrs. Amick.
Julie Grant
48:13
How do you motivate when they know the assignment won't be graded esp with the panademic spin we are in?
Heather Amick
48:27
Hi, Cunningham!
milagros carbonera
48:43
students love to respond on positive emails
Ayisha Lewis
48:48
Teachers for my school do not have to post final grades in this quarter how do you motivate without final accountability.
verdis
49:15
How do you engage the younger students who cannot read or express thoughts through writing?
Deb Elmore
50:32
You know that we are working a lot and you are still making us do so much work sometimes I do more work in your class than I do in my real classes your class isn’t important This was just received today from one of my 8th graders - Computer Science. Note all CTE work for our school is only An 30 minute assignment that they can work on for the Whole week. This is my 1st feedback like this of all my 15 yrs. of teaching =(
Kathleen O'Leary
50:37
Same in our county regarding grades/ but the parents checking in really want to see that we know their child is accountable!!
Kathleen O'Leary
51:09
Can you share a pacing guide?
Lucas Eitner
51:19
We do have some good parents who are taking on the role of coteacher ver ywell
Jordan Raivel
51:19
Do you have any online reward system ideas to get students more motivated? My class was very reward driven in the classroom
Shawn Oakley
51:26
Yes, how to engage younger students with few reading/writing skills. Would love to hear ideas for soliciting input.

53:17
we have to be flexible and adapt
Bobby Padgett
53:44
I still tell the kids what it would be if I could grade it, so they can judge periformance, it just doesn go int grade book
Annette Rodgers
53:54
From Annette Rodgers great information. Love the great motivation through communication.
Adam Renfro
53:54
FYI, those were our pacing guides before the COVID-19. They look different now, of course.
Geetanjali Soni
53:57
Great idea Laurie regarding using drawing to communicate. We also had a great session on SEESAW for young kids by NC Teachers of the year…will be posted on the site  https://www.ncvps.org/digital-transition
Kelsie Smith
53:58
Google Translate is pretty useful for translating things!
Shawn Oakley
53:58
Google translate isn't too bad for non-English speakers.
Heather Amick
54:00
Like Estes, I have questions about how to include parents of ELLs.
Kelsie Smith
54:28
And Class Dojo allows parents to translate messages - I use this with my elementary kiddos.
Cheri Choate
54:36
Deb Elmore—I’m with you! I think they’ve heard that that can’t be failed this semester, and they’re betting that’s a fact.
Michelle
54:56
I teach K and use Class Dojo. I've communicated with my students that I will be giving them points and class money when they complete and post their work! I'm hoping this will work with mine!
Z
55:23
@Deb Elmore: that specific feedback does not define your teaching career; give yourself some grace. That child is one you have not been able to reach; I am so sure there are several of your students who are so looking forward to see your class content and to interact with you. I am so sure you are an amazing teacher!
Lucas Eitner
55:28
you can do private conversations in google classroom
Jen Estes
55:28
I use Dojo and PowerSchool, mostly. Would you use Google Translate to translate directions and post them in both languages? This is for lower elementary students who can't read well themselves.
Melissa Davis
55:45
An archived recording of the session, as well as recordings and registrations for our other sessions will be available at: https://www.ncvps.org/digital-transition
Geetanjali Soni
56:18
@Nancy: Have you tried making a how to video with a screen capturing software.
Rosa Basi
56:27
How do you know if students are checking announcements, to give the extra credit?
Heather Amick
56:50
Is Google Translate reliable for use in teaching?
Vanessa Kelly
56:55
vanessa- I agree .Tho.se are some things I do with my younger kids. They love to draw . allowing them to dictate sentences about their pictures and have them copy the sentences .
Lucas Eitner
56:58
not really
Cheri Choate
57:06
I instruct them to send a simple reply.
lcrisan
57:16
Google translate no always accurate
Victoria
57:35
What about incentives for lower grades? I teach 5th grade and have implemented a ticket system where students can earn tickets throughout the week and on Fridays I pull names out of the bucket and they pick from the "prize box." Do you have any suggestions of incentives that can be done virtually for students that are consistently doing their work during this time when the work is not technically required?
Z
58:13
Google translate is very useful to use for words only, not for complete sentences or texts.
Kelsie Smith
58:26
If you use class dojo, you can give them dojo points for participating and sending things in. These can be cashed in when school is back in session.
Lucas Eitner
58:27
Throwback Thursday seems like a good way to keep consistency in lesson planning. students and parents using like consistency.
Ronald Fry
58:44
we all just tried
Marissa
59:06
@Ronald I tried :-)
Cassandra Edwards
59:16
I surely just tried!!!
Cheri Choate
59:30
A photojournalism project I just assigned is broken down into ‘tasks’—the first task is to send me a reply to the email I send them about the project. Easy A!
Shawn Oakley
59:36
Not sure what you mean, but google Translate is usually pretty accurate. I think it translates using Castillian Spanish (as spoken in Spain).. may be best for older folks (parents) with some level of education -- if parents don't read, it doesn't do much... if parents don't have vocab to deal with Castillian, could be misunderstood.
Geetanjali Soni

What if you "gave" your students virtual prizes -- then they could be anything...a Lamborgini, a video game system,... somehthing crazy? I don't know it that would work or not. I'm not much of an extrinsic motivator ;)
ptyndall
01:01:26
Love the "hold your nose and try to hum." Gotta try it with my elementary students

I like that last suggestion
Lucas Eitner
01:01:43
we're required to have office hours
Jodi Butler
01:01:46
I was thinking In K we could have a share day as a prize. Share a toy,a pet, a drawing etc…

In my photojournalism project, my freshmen are going to take photos that illustrate how their lives are NOT ‘business as usual’ right now. I gave them ideas of how to make their shots more creative. They are then to select their favorite photo post it with a brief caption. My plan is to actually have their work printed in a book that they’ll always have to remember this grim, historical moment in their lives.
Jean Boller
01:05:42
A free website is Vocaroo and is able to be attached to Remind
Sheri

Kari Ross
01:08:20
Does Parent Observer in canvas allow the parents to just observe and see or does it allow them any sort of participation?
Lucas Eitner
01:08:23
parents usually prefer email or phone. google classroom is not a good communication tool with parents because it's something they're not use to.
Angella.Green
01:08:45
How can this be done when their is no contact for parents at times
Sheri
01:08:46
I know how to add them, click on 3 vertical dots beside student name and it will be one of the options.
Angella.Green

Alexis Saunders
01:12:56
I use a Google Form I created to log parent contact. It creates a spreadsheet and puts a time stamp on it.
Lucas Eitner
01:13:15
we made a contact log with google sheets
Sheri
01:13:34
I created a main label for online activities and label sub-labels based on how I want it separated. I then just move the email with the student to the "student email" label
