Kellie Perkins, Visual Art, Cumberland County, was in the Equity Conference, sorry for just popping in!
Betsy Evers
37:08
Screen shots are a good idea
Jeni Day
37:39
@Betsy - YES! I teach my students how to do this early and make use of it often. It is GREAT for students, especially, who struggle with doing everything online.
Jeni Day
38:02
Screenshots are also great for when I am showing them how to do something online - which is often part of feedback when a student struggles with the tech or process.
steve stanley
38:04
Do we need to teach them how to take screen shots?
Kellie Perkins
38:06
Can someone repost the link to the slides please
Ms. Melisha
38:16
I did a screen record to demo for my parents.
Jeni Day
38:58
@Steve - teaching them how to do screenshots is definitely a best practice. Consider making a short "orientation" to teach those lessons, or having a quick "help" folder with some videos and/or presentations for different "how to" helps.
Henry Hall
39:39
No wonder the student got the last one wrong, the method they taught didn't teach how to carry the one.
Jeni Day
39:51
Absolutely, Tiffany! Exemplars can be a game changer! :)
zulema silva
40:22
Could you repeat the last part please, which picture you are talking about
Charles Hall
41:00
This is great. I was surprised that my math students were not able to upload or take screenshots. Who knew?
Jeni Day
41:11
These slides and a recording of the presentation will be made available to you all! I will post a link for you at the end. :)

Brett
41:32
thank you
Jeni Day
43:17
@dawnlouis-jean - Especially when they are using different devices that I expected! I found so many of my students were using phones, for example, or a tablet, instead of a PC or Chromebook or Mac. And each has its own screenshot method!
Charles Hall
44:10
same here
Jeni Day
44:12
Mastery and Standards-based rubrics are great, too, and all rubrics are super helpful for students to pre-evaluate and/or revise.
Jeni Day
44:36
@Roxana - in Canvas the students can see the main rubric but comments you add to the rubric are for that student alone.
Fermin Abarca
45:05
Do you let participate your students when creating a rubric or check list, etc. to develop ownership of their learning process?
Jeni Day
46:09
@Fermin - at the high school level I build up to more ownership by the student, for sure! At the beginning, though, I typically offer my rubrics until I know each is comfortable with the process. I love your note, though, about bringing the students into the process! Such an important part of learning!
Fermin Abarca
46:49
Thanks!
Jeni Day
47:14
This is also a great technique to teach students to provide feedback to each other if they are working on a shared project. :)
Jeni Day
48:24
@Lucille - Individualized feedback is a cornerstone of how we do feedback at NC Virtual because we have found the impact on student learning is profound. Once we knew how important it was, we then all worked to find ways to make it also manageable for teachers. :)
Jeni Day
50:31
Sanity tip - start small, like choosing to focus on one skill or creating 1-3 feedback comments and finding places on the work where that feedback applies (instead of creating feedback each time as you go).
Kellie Perkins
51:09
So you have the student insert their own image into the slide or doc for you and then collaborate with all, so cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jeni Day
51:11
BONUS - when you send emails like this you can always search your email by name and pull up your communication attempts to that parent, student, etc.
Diane McGrath
51:30
When grading online assignments, I store my comments in a word document so I can just copy the comment to individual students
Jeni Day
51:59
@Diane - yes! I do the same but use Notes to avoid format issues.
Kellie Perkins
52:21
Can you mention that last slide again please
John Mullen
52:59
Take a picture with the device webcam? Or with a smartphone?
Yvonne Dunham
53:15
How do you modify the rubric to meet the accommodations for students with IEPs
Rhonda Nichelle Mayo
53:20
probably be easier with a phone
Jeni Day
53:23
If your students are in Canvas and have a smartphone, they can directly upload an image as a submission using the phone app.
zulema silva
53:50
Is there a better quality way to upload pictures through CANVAS?
Jeni Day
54:01
I had students hold up the paper and take the picture with them in the image to help avoid "duplicates", too. LOL
John Mullen
54:19
We have gone to Macs--does anyone know how to upload pics with iPads?
Regina Spach
54:37
The Adobe scan phone app also works great too :)
zulema silva
54:44
My students love to take pics with their phones and upload them through CANVAS, but it is so hard for me to read what they they wrote, it is not clear, very blurry
Jeni Day
55:09
@John - it works much the same in Canvas whether a Mac or PC, but if you need specifics I typically find helpful videos or screenshots when I Google it, and then I share those with the students. :)
cynthiakmidowski
55:16
Scanned documents are much easier to read. Some of my “photos” from students are really muddy, unclear.
Betsy Evers
55:28
Love that
Jeni Day
55:35
@Zulema - it definitely can take some practice! Adobe Scan is my FAVORITE app when I need it to be as clear as possible. :)
Jeni Day
56:02
@Brett - it has been there for a while. :) There is one for students, teachers, and one for parents. :)
Amanda Gerken
56:06
We have used the CamScanner app to get clearer pictures
Jeni Day
56:16
And the apps are all LIFESAVERS if you use Canvas!!!!
Jeni Day
57:28

Jeni Day
58:44
The kids LOVE videos, as long as it is short. :) For some reason, they don't want to hear me talk about their work for 10 minutes - lol.
Diane McGrath
59:00
I used option on quizzes in Canvas where you can leave a comment for each answer choice. So if students picked the incorrect answer, so feedback it automatic.
Kellie Perkins
59:02
Please make screen larger
Jeni Day
59:52
@Brett - Schoolnet is supposed to have some sort of integration with Canvas, but it may need to be permitted by your district. I know for CMS they are working on that for us as we prepare for fall, but we have not yet been successful in the integration for our fall biology course.
Jeni Day
01:00:42
@Diane - YES! I build in feedback for each question for the Canvas quizzes and it is SO HELPFUL! You can do that for each answer choice, or choose to do that as one comment if right and a different comment if wrong, or as one general comment after the questions completes.
Tiffany Grant
01:01:06
@ Brett, a work around is to take the link to the school net assignment and place it in an announcement or assignment.
Jeni Day
01:01:27
If you have practice quizzes, clicker case studies, or even build an interactive learning experiences using the "quiz" feature in Canvas, building in feedback as @Diane mentioned is am amazing tool to help students get immediate feedback on demand.
Cecelia Clarke-Brown
01:02:25
that is awesome!!!
Tiffany Grant
01:02:57
I love this feature!!!
Jeni Day
01:03:04
SpeedGrader is a game-changer for Canvas users, and arranging by submission makes it even FASTER. :) You can also set the gradebook to automatically put in a score when the due date passes (like 60% or a 0).
Jeni Day
01:03:32
You do need to select "use for grading" on the rubric if you want it to add the points and use as the grade in Canvas.
Jeni Day
01:04:15
@zoom109- the eternal question - lol. That is much debated among many in education, I think. In short, it is a type of feedback. I think the question is whether it is enough to move students forward in learning.
Tiffany Grant
01:05:43
Canvas is much more streamlined
Jeni Day
01:05:54
I add to my feedback comment "Please make a submission comment here if you add to this discussion and want me to come back and re-score your work." :) That way the student has the onus of responsibility after revising to notify me. Of course, I teach high school students so that may not be a best practice for the younger kids.
Jennifer Goodson
01:06:08
Now that I know how to use Canvas, I would agree @Tiffany
zulema silva
01:06:13
Could you share the link of this workshop today please?

01:07:17
I have used the different google tools and this does seem to put it all in one place.
Jennifer Goodson
01:07:24
However, without the 3 levels of Canvas that I took through NCAAT, Canvas was very intimidating compared to Google Classroom
Jeni Day
01:08:48
You had me at "speed up grading" - lol.
Jeni Day
01:09:56

01:10:48
We also have a few webinars on "basic Canvas" available if you don't have time to do a full class (although those NCCAT classes are supposed to be amazing!) :)
Jeni Day
01:12:41
Feedback comments are a great way to differentiate, too - offering remediation and revision to those who need it verses enrichment options to those who need that, instead.
Diane McGrath
01:13:29
I also made videos of common mistakes (for math) and students loved it!
Jeni Day
01:13:48
Notice the use of names, even in a copy/paste feedback comment. Such a great relationship building strategy. :)
Jeni Day
01:16:20
One tip to increase student use of feedback, too, is to have students do a quick "feedback" entry each week - where they have to choose one of your feedback comments (or the number of your choice) and respond to that feedback. I use a Canvas quiz or Google Form to do that and add a complete/incomplete in Canvas to help build this as routine.
John Mullen
01:17:09
Any suggestions on how to give synchronous (real time) feedback?
Jeni Day
01:18:38
@Maddi and John - great questions! I will lift those up to Kirk and Tiffany at our last Q/A. I do synchronous feedback through built in feedback and via text or by "meeting" at a Google Doc or Canvas chat, if that helps.
Kellie Perkins
01:18:56
Synchronous feedback in office hours, you present their work, privately.
Laura Price
01:19:41
I agree with you. Whatever we do, we still need to build community and encourage engagement of the students in more personable way.
John Mullen
01:20:05
I'm wondering about immediate feedback during a live presentation, e.g. a Zoom or other meeting.
Jeni Day
01:20:09
My child's elementary teacher sent a quick video with feedback to her as an overall weekly feedback each week and she LOVED it. :)
