Can you import students from Google Classroom?
Chris Smith
43:51
@Philip, I do not believe you can import students from Google Classroom. If your district has purchased Canvas through the state contract, your instance should be connected to your school data. If you are using a free Canvas teacher account you will need to manually enter in your students.
Philip Woods-Jackman
44:37
Thanks!
Jessica Grooms
44:48
I'm pretty sure you can import them through PowerSchool in CCS, but I'm sure every school district is different. Our classes are already set up through PowerSchool for Cumberland.
Chris Smith
48:41
@Holly, you would have to work within your districts parameters when developing courses in Canvas. If your district blocks a particular resource, that block is most likely tied to individual school owned machines so students won’t be able to access those videos on the blocked sites.
Jessica Grooms
50:07
Some districts give teachers the power to unblock videos, too.
Chris Smith
51:07
@Cassie our presenters are going to discuss more about assignments in a little bit which will help answer your questions.

You can download the Canvas grades as a spreadsheet in the free version and then enter into PowerSchool.
Chris Smith
01:20:06
Nancy, at NCVPS, we use Canvas pages to display Lesson Introductions, State Standards, and Student objectives before students begin to work through the content.
Kimberly Holt
01:21:03
Yes! I was going to say I think pages are great to use as introduction pages and set up the next assignment or activity in a module.
Kimberly Holt
01:21:42
Also, if you didn’t want the students to submit an assignment but rather just for them to view you could add a page to include content for students
Darlene Schaefer
01:21:50
Pages are good for “teacher input” and “teacher talk” elements that do not require a student submission
Chris Smith
01:23:14
You can also use a Canvas page to index and hyperlink any important student documents you might have like the Syllabus, pacing guides, etc.
Dean Johnson
01:23:43
Can you see how often a student participants in a discussion?
Ashley Bailey
01:24:23
You can see that and have options for settings - sometimes I say that a student can't see other replies until they have submitted a reply.
Dean Johnson
01:25:23
Thank you.
Darlene Schaefer
01:26:03
Yes - you can moderate discussions to see student activity in the discussions@ Dean John

To adjust the left navigation @Nancy, go to settings>Navigation>and move to the top what you want students to see and move to the bottom what you want to hide
Chris Smith
01:27:31
@Nancy- Click on Settings, then click the Navigation tab in the center at the top of the page, and then you will see options that you can add to or take away from the menu of blue links that are showing on the left side of the page in the screen being shown now. Once you have moved things around by dragging and dropping, remember to scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save

You all were awesome!! Thanks for your wealth of knowledge.
Chris Smith
01:29:39
Exactly, it should really be coordinated throughout the school so that everyone is on the same platform and you should always check with your school and district leadership before making a decision as well.
